How did I get into mosaic?
The buildings of Utzon, Gaudi and Hundertwasser provided the inspiration to work on large scale mosaic. About 10 years ago I rented a Surry Hills studio and taught myself how to make tiny ceramic tiles. Explored the uniqueness of ceramic and developing production methods to produce large areas of tile. My designs could be realized with computer graphics, drawing with 'pixels' and translating them from computer screen to an architectural scale. This led to a 1993 solo exhibition of mosaic at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghurst. Since then I have been influenced by Roman and Byzantine portraiture and the Zillij wall work of Morocco. The brilliant light reflective and durable qualities of mosaic is perfect for the Australian outdoors lifestyle.

My curriculum vitae is available on the mike dodds cv page.
